Volunteering: making good choices

Sure, you want to make a difference and give back, but make sure that what you choose really suits your interests, talents and time constraints.

One of the greatest aspects about leaving my full-time career, I found, was finally having the time to give back. However, after testing the waters with a couple of charities, I discovered that some organizations fed my soul (marketing, copywriting, special events) and others just felt like drudgework (stuffing envelopes, etc.). Of course, most charities are very worthy causes, but they also need to be the right choice for you.

Volunteer Match is a wonderful source to find out exactly what needs exist in your own community. And they will be the first to point out that the most successful volunteering ventures are those that fit those causes you're most passionate about (human and women's rights, medical/healthcare, children's charities, conservation, etc.); that suit your professional background, skills and talents; and that conform to the time slots you're able and willing to contribute. Some charity guilds/leagues/chapters may also offer additional social activities, such as monthly luncheons and programs, that not only provide useful information about their advocacies, but also create networking opportunities. So you may want to seek out local chapters of national non-profit organizations that enrich your social life, too!
